The 29th NY Volunteers fought in several battles during their service, including Bull Run, Cross Keys, Groveton and Chancellorsville. In total, 28 men were killed in action, 15 died as a result of their injuries, 160 were injured and recovered and 103 soldiers went missing during their 2 year service period.
The summer of 1862 involved several unsuccessful advances and attacks primarily led by General Pope. The 29th NY volunteers fought in the battles at Groveton, Waterloo and Bull Run during this time. (NPS)
August 16-29: The 29th NY Volunteers participated in Pope's Campaign (also known as the Second Manassas Campaign and the Northern Virginia campaign) led by General John Pope. This included action along the Rappahannock River and eventually clash with Confederate Forces at Brawner's Farm against Stonewall Jack's troops.
The 29th NY Volunteers were involved in an unsuccessful attack in Fredericksburg in December 1861 led by Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, which ended with a "disastrous, rain-soaked retreat known as the 'Mud March.'"
